Picklemama Report
by Annette (fazzbech)

Change...you either love it, or you hate it! Myself, I love it. I love nothing more than to be challenged, and I love having to adapt to new things. I realise that not necessarily everyone shares my beliefs, and working in the IT industry for a long time, I sure came up against some people who were resistant to change, but I have always held the belief that if you don't change and try new things, you don't know if they will improve things for you. I remember when my kids were babies, you would just settle into a nice routine, and then you would have to change it, to adapt to the needs of the growing baby. I would tell my husband, ok, this is the new routine, and he would groan and ask why we need to change it? I would smile at him and say, how do you know the new routine won't be even better? New technology often means changing the way we do things, and in this issue, we introduce a new topic, one that might become a regular feature, and one that introduces something fun, and also, a change to the way we do something...that is, if you have an iPhone and you're willing to adapt!

We have also included some fun Halloween jokes and quotes, and although we don't really celebrate Halloween here in Australia, well, it is still a bit of fun!

A great tip for Resizing Layouts!
by mom2peanuts

When you resize your layouts with Save for Web in Photoshop, you usually lose some of the quality of the page, so here is what I do to make my pages look nice in online galleries:
Open your high resolution, saved JPEG file. Go to Image -> Image size and change your width and height to 600 pixels. Duplicate your layer and go to Filter -> Sharpen -> Sharpen. This will give your page a sharper look. If you want to give it an extra boost you can also apply a Soft Light blending mode (in the Layers Palette) to your duplicated layer. I then usually lower the Opacity of this layer to 10 or 15 percent. Merge your layers and File -> Save for Web.

You can see the difference in these before and after layouts, click on each image for a full size view, as the changes are subtle, but noticeable:

iPhone Applications for Scrappers
by fazzbech

Apple's iPhone is all the rage at the moment, and why wouldn't it be, it's a great phone/camera/toy! Yes, yes, we realise not everyone has one, and not everyone even wants one, but I have to say, I got my iPhone a few months ago now, and it really is changing the way I do things, for the better! For those new to the iPhone, an application is just like an add-on for your phone, kind of like a piece of software that helps you do something - there are both free and paid applications available.

First up, is the Scrapbooking application from Coolibah, which hasn't quite been fully approved by Apple yet (it's a long process). That's right, you can scrap your photos right on your iPhone, and then share them with your friends or favourite social networking places!

Scrapbooking App by Coolibah

You can view a demo video of what the application can do on the Coolibah website. Free and paid scrapbooking kits will be available, and can be used in the application to scrap your photos, these kits have been specially designed for the iPhone application. I'm going to be honest here and say, hey, that's great and fun, however...why would I want to scrap photos on my tiny iPhone when I have a beautiful, big monitor and Photoshop at home? Maybe that is just me though, so go ahead and see what you think for yourself!

The next iPhone application is The Best Camera by renowned photographer Chase Jarvis.

I absolutely LOVE the theory behind why this application was developed - basically, Chase Jarvis believes that the best camera is the one that is with you. It doesn't have to be your most expensive camera and equipment, which, let's face it, we don't lug around with us everywhere. The best camera, is the one that is with you, and your phone, is for many people, usually always with them. So don't let precious moments pass you by just because you didn't bring your DSLR camera, don't think that you only want to capture moments perfectly, with perfect composition - that isn't always the important thing. It matters more that the moments are captured, even if it was with your iPhone.

The application basically provides you with a set of simple filters and effects, which you an apply to your photos, you can even stack them, and rearrange the order of them, to play around with the different effects - you can see an online demo of how it works. Once you are happy with your photo, with the press of a button you can share it via email or through various social networking groups. Shoot, edit, share...it's that easy! While there are a number of nice filters, it does currently lack much sort of control as to the amount of filter applied, but hey, that might be improved upon in future updates, and for $3.99AUD for the app, who's complaining?! The Best Camera by Chase Jarvis

There is also a whole online community behind this application, where you can share and vote on photo uploads daily. Very inspiring to see what can be done with a camera phone!

Blood Crow

This would be such a great font to use for all your creepy Halloween pages! It would make a great title font as it is nice and solid and very easy to see. There were so many ooky and gross fonts we could have shared this month but this one stood out as suitably scary without the oozing gore dripping down! If you are interested in seeing a great range of other Halloween fonts, check out DaFont Halloween Fonts.

Take some Vetoramas!
What is a vetorama I hear you say? Well, it is a panorama, but instead of being horizontal, it is vertical, so it goes up! If you have a narrow piece of wall at home, a blown up, framed vetorama might look great there! Find some tips for taking vetoramas in the full Photojojo article, but don't despair if you think taking 3 photos and stitching them together is too difficult - some clever cropping could also do the trick!
