Harrison Fisher, along with Charles Dana Gibson, set the ideal for women’s fashion and demeanor from the 1890s to the early 1930s. Photos of my Wood grand aunts - Mollie, Nannie, and Isadora - followed those fashions. Mollie must have hated some of them. A 19-inch waist was hardly comfortable during pregnancy! This ideal American Beauty never really existed - it was impossible to attain - but the artwork of the era is an amazing tool for dating photographs. And the prints and fashion plates are a feast for the eyes!
