Marc Chagall, who had to flee France to escape the Nazi invasion, created the windows in the church as a token of friendship and peace between France and Germany--as well as between Judaism and Christianity.
Chagall was 91 years old when he designed the first windows in 1976. At the age of 98, he created several more and gave them to the church as a gift. He died a few months later.
