VIVIENE

You know how one thought leads to another and so on. Well, the minute I saw this fabulous kit with all the period furniture, I immediately thought of old movie stars and one of the first that came to mind was Viviene Leigh, which in turn led me to a memory of how my father taught me a lesson Ive retained all my life. Now, at this point youre welcome to quit reading as the story is long and I like to document these things for my daughters, but if youd like, youre more than welcome to WADE through this!

When I was in High School, I was reading a book called, Carpetbaggers, and in its day, it was considered pretty racy! LOL! I was in my room, fairly late at night reading it and calling my girlfriend, reading her all the scandalous parts! I guess my Dad saw the light on beneath my door and knocked. Quickly, I grabbed a magazine and put it in front of the book. I had never been very good at lying and knew he wouldnt exactly approve of my reading material. He came in and asked what I was reading. Well, I did a little fudgy and without saying a word, lifted the magazine. All of the sudden he started laughing. I looked at him quizzically, to which he asked, Isnt it a little difficult reading that upside down? Nabbed! So, I showed him what I was REALLY reading! He said he would make a deal with me I could read Carpetbaggers with his permission, even read it in the living room, if I agreed to read a book of his choosing when I completed it! COOL!!! I thought I was just waaaay cool! I finished the book and he went to the library and checked out Gone With The Wind. A few nights later, after once again seeing my light on beneath my door, he knocked. When I said Come in, he saw that I was crying my eyes out. I hadnt even taken my make-up off and there was mascara from one end of my face and the pillow to the next! He looked a little startled and asking what was wrong to which I replied, Bonnie died! Again, he laughed, but gently and said that the mark of a good book is that it can transport you and had the ability to make you feel. He also said that the world was filled with smut, but it was equally filled with beauty, art and goodness. Again, it was a choice, what you wanted to read, what you chose to count as important in your life, and where you chose to focus your point of view. I think of that often and I thinkhope and praythat it has shaped my life as it did his. (By the way, when I finally got to see it [as it was pretty old], GWTW, it was, and has remained my favorite movie, as does the book--- the reasons apparent, but not the least of which was the wisdom my father imparted.)
