I swear I can't sleep.. every night I go through the same thing.. I want to sleep.. really I do.. I need sleep I really really really do.. I go to bed to go to sleep.. and I stare at the ceiling, my head starts thinking of all the things I should do, all the things I want to do, all the things I could do and then finally it says what the heck are you doing here staring at the ceiling just get up and do them cus your not sleeping...

sigh... anyone else have this never ending story going on in their head at night? I am not too good with sleeping pills so not a good alternative.. what things have any of you tried?

I can go to sleep easily but I don't stay asleep for long......like you I am constantly lying there thinking of the things I could/should be doing. I have found as I get older the less sleep I really need. I walk at 5 am every morning and still this doesn't help with sleeping....but it does clear my head and make me feel good.
Sleeping is rather over rated...lol

I get insomnia too sometimes. I believe it's part of being a woman in her late 40's. A lot of my friends in their 40's are the same.

I have noticed if I take a long hot shower before bed I get more relaxed. You can try meditation too. Just sit in bed and close your eyes and breathe deeply in and out while clearing your mind. Another thing that works for me is having the radio on low and just listen to the music..that ALWAYS makes me drift off.

My mother swears by warm milk, but I think it's disgusting cold, so warm is worse, unless I put some vanilla in it.

I think a lot of creative people have this issue from what I have read. I too have this problem but I do take medicine and it helps me. If I didn't take it I would be up for weeks. Which is never a good end result. And I too have to have back ground noise in order to sleep and that is the TV. All it takes is a commercial and I am gone.

Funny story about medication.. The doctor prescribed me with a medication to help me sleep a few years ago.. I had heard stories (which happens when your hubby is a pharmacist haha) that you need to be careful and lock the doors etc because you can tend to wander in the night without realizing it..
Well... I was one of those people you could say.
My son was on a mission for our church when they first put me on the medication (over anxiety of missing child/mom syndrome) One morning my hubby calls me and says what did you send "Bug" (that is my son) last night online..
I said.. nothing why... well I just was paying bills and there is a charge that went through from "cookies to missionaries" for $85.... must have been a really good bag of treats you ordered him!!
Then a few days later I get my weekly letter from my son saying mom.. are you okay.. really I am fine.. don't worry about me mom.. I promise I am going to be okay.. I promise I am going to come back home.. don't worry mom...
I had not only sent him the whole entire menu they had on their site to send to the missionaries but had also sent him a letter telling him that I just knew he was never going to come home and how horrible it was that I was never going to be able to see him again!!!

so... this girl.. she isn't allowed medication any more.. and the credit cards were locked up until all the meds were out of her system :/

I did go to the gym at night with our family before football season started and we would work out for a couple of hours each night.. after that I usually slept pretty well.. but, I am like you I guess Julie, the older I am getting the less sleep I seem to be needing. I do like the thought though that it is because I am a creative person Laura haha Trace my hubby would roll his eyes if I sat and did meditation.. he would probably laugh hysterically... actually.. I might have to try that :)

I get insomnia all the time too! Just last night we went up at 10:30 to read and I didn't get to sleep until about 2p! Just tossed and turned and couldn't get my brain to shut down.I get so frustrated sometimes. And of course it doesn't help that in our new house, we have shades on the windows and a french door to a deck that has blinds but they were there previously and we haven't bought our plantation shutters yet. So they aren't room darkening and that is one thing I have to have...very dark! Also a stupid skylight that has to be covered. Who would want one in their bedroom anyway? My doctor said it can be a symptom of post menopause.Guess that can be true...who knows. I've had it for several years and I hate taking meds so I suffer with it. Guess it is what it is.OfftoBed

I don't usually have problems with insomnia. I just don't sleep enough :p I have never felt good if I sleep 8 hours a night (unless I've been really sleep deprived for a long time). I operate much better on about 6 hours of sleep per night.

But, I will say that I have had a harder time getting back in this timezone after our two week vacation. The first night home, we'd been up for about 24 hours. I went to bed at 10:00, and was wide awake at 3:43 (I hate digital clocks *grin*) Next night, in bed at 10:30, same story...wide awake at 3:43 (what the heck is it with that time?) The next night, I slept about 4 hours...erg. I have felt tired all day long since we got home, which doesn't usually happen. Lol, I keep falling asleep at my computer, but I don't want to lay down for an official nap because then I'm not sure that I'll sleep at night. I FINALLY slept over 7 hours last night, and didn't wake up at 3:43...so I think I'm finally back in synch. YAY...I wasn't loving sleep problems.

Unless I'm really worried about something, I don't have any trouble going to sleep. Sometimes it takes a hot tubby to get into the "relax" zone, but once I hit the pillow, I'm usually out. If I can't fall asleep, I get up and read or work for a while longer, and can usually get to sleep on the second try :)
