I think this falls under the category of Random Question of the Day -

Anyway, I have noticed lately(well, not just lately!) that my boys childhood is so different from mine. It really makes me think of the things I enjoyed as a little girl, that my boys will never know. The one thing that my husband and I seem to refer back to often is Saturday morning cartoons. My favorite memory was waking up at 5:00am on a Saturday so I could get my snacks - mini marshmallows and Hersheys syrup or a bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos - and sit down in front of the tv in time to watch Scooby Doo. Whats yours?

By the way, this would be great for a layout - I got the idea from an old mojo challenge. Try it! I'll do mine in a week or so, right now I am working on another couple of layouts :)

Funny, my hubby and I have this same conversation all the time, but he grew up in Holland, so his childhood memories are very different from mine. He remembers going for walks in the forest on Sundays with his parents....and actually TALKING without any electronic interruptions. That rarely happens these days. I remember playing night games with the neighborhood kids...kick the can, no bears are out tonight, and "hooky bobbing" behind cars when it was snowy. We'd actually hang onto the bumper of the car, and my dad (or whoever was driving) would pull us along behind the car. Not very fast, but man, that was so much fun....and now that I think about it, so freaking dangerous. Lol, yup, we really did that every winter. we'd NEVER let kids do that now. We told our grandkids how we used to have to know which night and time our favorite shows came on TV so we could see them, otherwise, we were out of luck. They can't even imagine that....such a weird concept to them to not be able to see things anytime on any device. I still remember that Happy Days was on Tuesdays at 7 when I was about 12-14...loved that show (yup, I'm that old). *grin* We did Saturday morning cartoons, too...but we always folded laundry while we were watching, so the snacks came later. And man, we never got up that early. Saturday was our day to sleep in, unless we were harvesting stuff from the garden, then we were up at the crack of dawn to help mom get stuff ready to put in the canning jars. We played hard and we worked hard when we were kids!

We were in San Antonio, so snow wasn't an option, but we used to hang on to the back corner of our neighbors car and he'd pull us around the neighborhood on our bikes. I'd totally forgotten about that, but it sure was fun. BTW, I remember Happy Days on Tuesdays, too - yep, I'm that old also! The getting up that early was when I was rally young - early elementary. After a while, I always had things to do around the house on Saturdays. And my boys can't even conceive of having to remember a TV schedule - they are so used to watching what they want, when they want. Something to be said for delayed gratification!

I don't have many childhood memories to recall...guess that comes from an unhappy childhood. I do remember holidays with my grandparents and how my grandfather loved and spoiled me. That surely helped compensate for life at home.
I also remember happy Days (I am really that old!!! LOL) watching cartoons but these were things I did with my kids. Loved Scooby Doo!! We didn't have TV while I was young so we had to find other ways to amuse ourselves...something kids can't seem to manage these days unless they have some sort of electronic devise in their hands.

Julie, I am the same as you.. most of my childhood memories are a blur and I think for a good reason they are blocked. but there are a few things that I remember.. we were talking about this on Sunday while we were decorating the tree. We would have to put icicles on each branch and decorating took days to make sure they were all in the right place.. Decorations for the tree were done handmade each year by my mum. She was a good memory that I have.. I miss her almost every single day. I remember tv shows like Happy Days and Brady Bunch and Gilligans Island!!

My hubby had a great childhood and he talks about his all the time, they did a lot of camping and tons of outdoor activities, never home enough to watch tv or even be in the house. He says that the summer time they would rarely even sleep in the house, most nights were all outside and even then they just ran the neighborhood playing at each others houses.. never in trouble, just having fun.

My kids (older ones) kept the tradition of night games and playing outside because before we moved to where we are now we lived in a little community where there was nothing to do but play outside and do those kinds of things. So they did the same kinds of things that my hubby did growing up and they loved it. My youngest two that are home now though they are in a different world. all electronics and not much into the traditions and times of the activities that seem to have been lost. sad as those seemed to be great memories for my husband and my older kids.

My son just brought up another memory - drive-in movies. I never went with my family, but I went weekly with a friends family. We always had a great time, sitting on top of the car, running to the concession stand, etc. I sure wish they still had some here in town :)

My favorite childhood memory is going camping at the lake with my family. We would all cram into the family vehicle, as many of us that would fit, and head up north in Michigan to go camping for the weekend. I never remember bringing a whole lot with us, but we never seemed to run out of things to do! So much different from the camping trips I take with my kids now! LOL

Of course, there is always going to stay at my grandparents for a month in the summer. My parents would send me up to Chicago on a plane and then they would drive up from Texas and stay for a couple more weeks before we would all ride home.

My favs were saturday morning cartoons (MEEP MEEP!), watching the muppet show with the family and watching dr who with dad, blanket forts, rough & tumbling with the dog, the camping trips out to Big Sur in CA...... along with running the neighborhood without a care in the world with the neighbor kids, something kids nowadays just can't do, which is sad.... and the weekend get-togethers with dad's navy buddies and their families. *Sigh* the good ole days!

As for electronics, there is only 1 hour or so after dinner that my kids are allowed to have their tablets during the week. Weekends are a little different. If their cousin is at my mom's they'll sit on skype with him and play minecraft for a little while, but other than that, the same electronical rules apply. They are forced to pursue other things (ie, forced to have an imagination - the horror!).

We almost always do a movie night on friday (tomorrow we're watching maze runner the scorch trials!) and a game night on saturday and electronics are not even allowed to be in the same room for that, or during dinner. When we go to my parent's, it's the same deal with electronics... we're there to spend time with family, not sit and ignore each other all day with a gadget in our laps.

The ONLY exception to our electronical rules on the weekends is the Wii. We have several several sports related games, the Fit and a couple of Just Dance/Dance Party games. They can play any of those for as long as they want, because they're moving ... not just sucking up gadget waves & ignoring the rest of the family :p

Bianka, we bought an inflatable kayak, so I'm hoping to do some of that camping fun stuff with the boys. Solarquest (space Monopoly) is a family favorite, so I think we'll bring that one with us!
