I have to say Kristina I barely ever get down that way, you all are too hot for me :) And I am so used to my slow paced life. But I am Skype phone call away :)

I rarely go up your way, either. Haha.
Slow life, what's that like? Lololol. Two toddlers mean I rarely slow down.

We live in quite a small cul de sac and we made a conscious effort to try and bring the people together. There are about 40 houses in the road and we started a tradition of street parties. We organised the first one for the Royal Wedding in 2011, a second for the diamond jubilee in 2012 and since then people have wanted it to be annual.
Its a real simple idea. At the end of the close is a dead end and this is opposite our house so my husband sets up his PA system for music, everyone brings their own tables, chairs and food and we just share the party together. They usually start around 4.30 and go on way past midnight. It has brought the whole community together and we now feel we know our neighbours.

and for the Jubilee my husband also made a life size queen to go on our balcony to watch over proceedings

Yes!!!! This is what I thought our neighborhood would be like. We also live in a cul de sac... at the end of the road is a park, with (newly) covered tables and play area.... but apart from names of a handful, we don't know/see most of them :(

Its a great way to get to know them. We just made leaflets and put them through every door and watched to see who turned up - about 2/3 turned up the first time. My husband had a plan of the close on a big board and added everyones names as they arrived and made us all wear labels so we got to know everyone's names.

He's very OCD!!!!

I love reading about everyone's situation - Dolly, I am envious! I wanna live on your street.

I need scrapping friends here in Texas :)

But, back to the subject - my kids are the ice breakers here - any neighbors we know is through the kids meeting them first (except for our next door neighbors - we own some of the property behind their house - a very tenuous friendship!)

Oh my heck, I totally missed this thread. Dolly, I want to live in your neighborhood! We have lots of great neighbors, but I don't even know some of them (lol, not the great ones...I know them). That's so different from how it was when I was a kid. I live in a house just across the street from my childhood home - we knew all of our neighbors and spent lots of time with each of them. They were like extra grandparents for me *grin* We rarely get together for anything like a neighborhood party now. We have picnics at our church, and that brings out quite a few of our neighbors...but seriously, I want to live on your street :).

I live in a little town of 650 or so, and that's pretty much my "neighborhood." It's great going to the Post Office and saying a genuine "Hi! What's up?" and spend 20 minutes talking to 10 different people... As far as my street neighbors go, we know most of them--several are vacation rentals, so of course those people come and go. We know all their dogs, all their kids, and all their bad habits... *lol* and they know ours.

Heather my town is a bit larger than yours, but it's the same type. Everyone meets at the post office and we all watch out for each others kids, pets and homes. About half of the town is summertime people, but most of them own their homes are snowbirds in Florida during the winter, and come home for the summer. So right now, the town is packed and that's when most of us don't care for it lol. Our beach is large, but in the summer it's way too crowded. It comes with the territory when you live in a beach town though, and at least most of our summer visitors have grown up or old here.
